It makes sense why you would want to try and fix your home’s electrical problems yourself. These days, there are resources, like Pinterest and YouTube, that make it seem easier than it actually is. You might even think you will save some money doing it yourself. However, there are many good reasons why it’s not a good idea to DIY electrical repair. Here are a few of those reasons.

Why You Should Never DIY Electrical Repairs

  • Risky Business. Trying to DIY your electrical repair can put you, others, and your home in harm’s way. There is a chance you will be on the receiving end of electric shocks, electrocution, and even electrical fires if you try to do the repairs yourself. Electrical work is dangerous, and if not done properly, you run the risk of making your electrical problems worse and more hazardous. It is best to call a professional electrician to handle your electrical repairs rather than try to DIY them.
  • You Could Waste Money. If you don’t know exactly what you are doing when trying to fix your electrical problem, you could end up making your problem worse. This means the money you spent on materials for that job was wasted, and if you try to attempt fixing the problem yourself again and it fails again, you are out even more money. In the end, you will need to call an electrician, and the money you spent trying to DIY your electrical repairs would have been better used paying for that service.
  • Legality and Insurance. You might think electrical work is something anyone can do; however, performing electrical work without a permit can lead to fines and even jail time. Also, if you or someone in your family were to get hurt because of a bad DIY electrical repair, your insurance could deny you coverage for the injury. If you were to sell your home and something were to happen to the new owners because of a faulty DIY repair, there is a chance you could get sued and end up facing a lot of legal problems.

As you can see, it is best to leave your electrical repair to a professional and skip the DIY attempt. If you are thinking about trying DIY first, leave that thought and call us here at Lamm Electric, and we will take care of your electrical repairs properly.
