As electricians, our job is to address the electrical needs of our residential and commercial clients, whether they need installation, repair, or replacement services. However, client education is also an important part of what we do, as it helps people stay safe and save money.
Here are four key things your electrician wants you to know:
- A breaker box and a fuse box are two different things. These terms are often used interchangeably, which is understandable since they both protect the electrical system from overloads. The difference is that a circuit breaker box has switches that can be reset after they trip, whereas a fuse box has single-use fuses that must be replaced after they blow. Breaker boxes are more common in modern homes.
- Appliances still draw electricity when plugged in. Known as phantom power or standby power, this electricity results in energy wasted and higher electrical bills. If you want to save electricity, and protect your home against hazards like electrical fires, you can build small habits like unplugging your toaster, coffee maker, phone charger, and laptop when they are not in use.
- A GFCI and a surge protector protect against different threats. A GFCI detects current leaks to prevent fatal electric shocks, while a surge protector protects against sudden voltage spikes, such as those cause by a lightning strike or power outage, to prevent equipment damage.
- Pets often detect problems with electrical outlets. If your pets have suddenly become very interested in an electrical outlet in your home, you should get the outlet checked by an electrician. They may be reacting to noise you can’t hear, vibrations, or smells that could indicate burning insulation or a wiring issue.
