When the lights go out, so do your operations. This is why any commercial electrician, including those on our team here at Lamm Electric, will tell you that having a commercial generator on-hand is extremely important.
As a commercial electrician, we recognize that the benefits of having a commercial generator to use in times of emergency extend beyond having electricity when you need it. Having a backup generator can also ensure the safety of your customers and employees, minimize disruptions in your day-to-day activities, preserve your business’ productivity, and allow you to keep your doors open in the event of a power outage.
However, before you go out and buy a commercial generator, it’s best to think about what type of generator your business could benefit the most from. As a commercial electrician, we generally recommend going with one of the following:
- A portable generator—Typically, these generators are rated no higher than 15 kilowatts and 240 volts. Since these generators are relatively small, they can be moved to various locations for temporary use and are capable of keeping a few appliances or pieces of equipment powered at one time.
- A permanent generator—Unlike portable generators, permanent ones are wired directly into your location’s electrical system. When the generator transfer switch senses that a power outage has occurred, it transfers the needs of the building to the generator. Then, once power is restored, the power source is transferred back to the utility lines.
