As homes age, electrical rewiring is often necessary because the cables get worn out, creating dangerous situations inside the walls that you can’t even see. One example is worn-out insulation caused by excessive heat from an overloaded circuit.

Some Common Signs That Your Home May Need Electrical Rewiring

electrical rewiringIt’s a good practice to periodically have the circuits checked, but sometimes electrical issues have a nasty habit of sneaking up on unsuspecting homeowners. If your house is nearing, or has exceeded, the age of 40 years, you’ll want to be aware of some signs that your home might need electrical rewiring.

  • Fuses and Breakers Go Out Regularly: A word of caution here – don’t be tempted to replace the breaker or fuse with a higher-rated unit. This would be very dangerous and would significantly increase the likelihood of a fire on that circuit.
  • Flickering or Dimming Lights: This is a common sign of a circuit overload. Sometimes, even a good wiring system will cause momentary flickering or dimming, but if it happens frequently, the wiring may be faulty or the circuit breaker may need replacing.
  • Discolored, Charred or Buzzing Switches and Outlets: These symptoms should be taken seriously. Have an electrical rewiring expert assess the situation.
  • Burning Smell: If the smell is acrid, call an electrician right away and keep a fire extinguisher on hand until he arrives.
